The Beginning of IQAir

It is 1963 in Germany and the Hammes brothers, Manfred and Klaus, have just introduced a simple filter system for residential users. It is composed of a filter pad that attaches to the air outlet of residential coal ovens with small magnets. Dust gets trapped in the filter when the cold air rises, heats up and passes through the filter. This is the first air purifier made for household use. The draw of the air purifier initially was that it helped reduce the about of black dust build-up on the walls behind ovens. Manfred soon discovered as a lifetime asthma sufferer that his flare-ups during the winter months have been reduced. The allergy and asthma symptoms of numerous users are relieves by the air purifier as well.

Keeping it in the Family

Throughout the 60s and 70s, Klaus continues to make the filter for radiators, baseboard heaters, forced air heating and cooling systems and other heating systems. In 1981, Manfred passed away and Klaus relocated the company to Switzerland. The company begins to expand from Switzerland to the rest of Europe and the United States. Frank Hammes, a recent graduate from Cambridge University and Klaus' son, joins the company and focuses on fan powered room air cleaners. He finds that commercial systems are large, expensive and effective while small consumer room air purifiers are ineffectual. In 1994, he started on his first of four years of intensive research and development in conjunction with a team of Swiss and German engineers to build the most effective collection of compact air purifiers. The HealthPro Plus is first introduced in the spring of 1998 and tested by Stiftung Warentest in September of 1998. This leading product testing organization found that the HealthPro Plus outperforms all of its competitors. During the year 2000, IQAir purifiers become an instant success with allergy and asthma sufferers in the United States. Another member of the family, Klaus' son Jens Hammes, joins the company in 2001.

IQAir Helps Combat Disease and Poor Indoor Air Quality

IQAir receives a H12/13 certification for its HyperHEPA filters in 2002. This is the first room air cleaner to receive this certification and these filters are usually only available in multi-million dollar cleanroom filtration systems. In 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) breaks out, which is a highly contagious condition caused by a new corona virus for which there is no special antiviral treatment. The Hong Kong Hospital Authority chose IQAir as the best room air cleaning solution for hospital rooms with suspected SARS patients after weeks of testing and the installation of several trial systems. In 2004 IQAir was also selected as an educational partner to advance public education on issues of indoor air quality by the American Lung Association. The issue of ozone-producing room air purifiers was one of the first educational campaigns addressed. Also in 2004, IQAir appears on an episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition seeking to create America's healthiest home. This appearance sets the foundation for subsequent episodes in which IQAir offers superior air purification to families with serious medical issues.
